AN AMPUTEE’S VIEW – Best Foot Forward

Thasveer Muhammed was short of something but realised that only a limitless mind can seize the important moments in life.

Rarely, on an Instagram handle, you’d see a profile that describes oneself as an amputee. But, there is also seldom a good, old-fashioned and resilient story being narrated. Thasveer, a model by profession, was left scarred for life following a tragic accident. Fighting against all odds, mental trauma and physical challenge, he resurfaced to narrate his story in a spirit that has been inspiring thousands across the state, and nation. His Instagram account is evidence of his unfettered impetus. On November 17, 2013, Thasveer, a Bcom student, celebrated his birthday with his friends, well into the night, and decided to go on a bike ride. Tragedy lurked just around the corner, and in the early hours of the following morning, they met with an accident. His main artery in his leg was severed. Without any delay, he was wheeled in for a surgery but after three days the infections persisted, leading to an amputation. Sixty days of gruesome pain and very turbulent sleep, Thasveer could not grasp the line that bordered between a nightmare and reality.

The one year of bed rest incapacitated him. As well as his physical impairment, his modelling career, and his clothing line store had come to a halt. But instead of going through a breakdown he turned things around. His family and friends constantly stood by his side and helped lift his spirits during crestfallen moments. As his name ‘Thasveer’ reflects, he decided to narrate his vindication through photography. He started an Instagram handle @thasvy, which rapidly gained thousands of followers of his inspirational pictures. From the creative compositions to his single –legged stance , he’s inspired many followers with how he’s gained his own stability in life. There’s a nonchalance to his past, as he moves on with his witty hashtags, #oneleg #oyeitsmystory. When in conversation, his steadfast nature just proves how he stays true to his words, “ When every heartbeat is stronger than the storm, who needs legs to perform.”

On Staying Fit

fwd life An Amputee’s View Thasveer Muhammed(1)

“I remember when I was wheeled out of the ICU, the doctor consoled me by saying that I could play football after three months.” Fate had other plans. Three days later, his right leg was amputated as his infections persisted. “The year of bed rest, made me restless and then the physiotherapy was intense. Currently the physiotherapy is done, and the metal rod in my left leg will but taken off but not the one in my right arm. “And there’s stopping this spirited young lad. “I have gotten back into football as a striker and into cricket as a batsman. I will soon be looking into getting a prosthetic leg from Ottobock, a German brand. I am looking forward to training on that and then walking with a new leg!”

On handling Perceptions

fwd life An Amputee’s View Thasveer Muhammed(2)

Thasveer has no interest for sympathy. He shrugs it off with his positive attitude and his pair of power crutches. “One of the toughest challenges is when society eyes you with pity. I decided that my positive attitude and putting a brave face was the way to say I am fine. So I got myself customised Superman and Batman crutches to lighten things up.”

On Accepting Reality

fwd life An Amputee’s View Thasveer Muhammed(3)

“One of the hardest moments in my life was right after the accident. For 60 days I could not sleep and I was recovering from shock. In just a moment you lose your career, dreams, and even the most basic thing as the ability to walk for the rest of your life. Yet, after all, that pain I had to endure, I realised how grateful I was to be alive. Thus, I was inspired to do the best I could. Many people dream with their eyes closed, to me an eye opener was to model and travel against all odds. I wasn’t afraid to see anymore. “Going beyond modelling, Thasveer has signed up his first movie, Nishad Ravuthar’s directorial debut “One and Only”.

FWD caught up with six women who confidently prove that being fashionable does not mean fitting into a mannequin’s mould

GANGA G NAIR

Executive Assistant

fwd life Plus Sized and Fashionable Ganga G Nair(1)

Has your weight ever come in the way of choosing a style?

Yes and I believe all these no-nos are in our head. When I first tried on the pencil skirt, I realised I look fabulous in western wear.

Have you broken any fashion rule?

No. The golden rule is to be comfortable in whatever you wear.

Do you feel pressured by the popular body image?

My size was never a burden for me, it never limited me from the life I wanted to live. However, occasionally the implications my weight has on my health concerns me.

MONISHA SINHA

Pastry Chef

fwd life Plus Sized and Fashionable Monisha sinha(1)

What is the one thing you take into consideration while choosing an outfit?

Wear what your heart says; nothing and no one can define your body but you.

What is your comfort zone?

Sometimes more than the cut or pattern of clothes, the quality is what matters, because it reflects on you. I indulge in quality, because it makes me feel good.

What’s your major fashion faux pas?

Giving into wearing clothes that the society won’t judge me for. The first rule of being a confident dresser is to set fashion guidelines for myself.

SWETHA VINESH

Fashion Designer

fwd life Plus Sized and Fashionable Swetha Vinesh(1)

What do you think about the term “fat”?

It doesn’t matter. I used to be a model eight years ago, and I gained weight after becoming a designer. This outlook of an ideal size is a ridiculous concept.

As a designer, what fashion guidelines have you refused to follow?

In Kerala, ladies are on the heftier side, they often prefer wearing sarees and salwar suits. Personally, I have ditched loose pants, and settled for some well-fitted pants and tops. After all, curves are in.

What should be tossed out of a suitcase?

Low self-esteem. It is not the shape of your body that matters, it is the attitude. You will feel beautiful when people see you the way you are and not by your size.

SHALU GEORGE

Make-Up Artist

fwd life Plus Sized and Fashionable Shalu George(1)

Are you conscious to admit that you are a plus size?

(Laughs) Or conscious to say I am in a plus-sized model shoot? No, I think it is a beautiful experience.

The big fashion crime?

I am not sure why there is so much restriction on wearing sleeveless tops. Listening to these comments, makes us too conscious and objectify our bodies. I personally don’t listen to them and wear whatever I feel like.

What are your thoughts on body image?

The society, media and the world of modeling have set a lot of standards. I feel understanding your body is like understanding yourself and not letting others define you.

JASEENA KADAVIL

Make-Up and Hair Stylist

fwd life Plus Sized and Fashionable Jaseena Kadavil(1)

What was one thing you took away from the shoot?

Sometimes you feel that very fashionable things can only be worn rarely. Whenever I head for shoots, I wear loose shirts and jeans just so I don’t feel too concious. Usually, designing plus size costumes are not a speciality for everyone, thus dressing up casually and fashionable is something that I never imagined.

What surprises you about the popular body image?

It’s funny that I am a makeup and hair style artist, and I usually do styling for brides and models. They all set the standards when it comes to being a perfect size, and I have wondered how it is to be a plus sized model? FWD brought out a refreshing side to it.

Trying out something new for your wardrobe?

Definitely important, but I realise it’s not the clothes you wear but how confident you are. In the end, that’s what brings an ensemble to life.

ANITHA KURIAKOSE

Marketing Executive

fwd life Plus Sized and Fashionable Anitha Kuriakose(1)

What plus-sized clichés have you had to fight against?

(Laughs) Sometimes people dress up based on others’ opinions of how they should dress. My mother used to tell me to wear long and loose kurtas, and to avoid short sleeves and leggings. But when you find a certain comfort factor, you realise you wear what you want to wear. I was most pleased to find a comfortable pair of palazzos.

Has size ever been a hindrance while shopping?

There are times when you see a wonderful dress in a store and wish you could lose tonnes of weight to pull it off. But there is always something suitable, and fashionable for each of us. When I go to work I love mixing my attire with formal pants, dresses and even skirts. What matters at the end is that when you look at the mirror, you should feel content.

Do you feel pressurised by your own body image?

The truth is I would love to lose weight, not just for the sake of looking good, but feeling good. There are health concerns when you are overweight, body image is the least of it.

AND SHE WAS

An abode of lost stories was hers to visit again.

Words by Atheena Wilson      Photos by Jinson Abraham Exclusively shot on Nikon D810

There were times and people she left behind, she can’t remember when and whom. Not even when she waved goodbye to her defeated moments. Somewhere in the sprint of landscapes on her train ride, she got a glimpse of her ancestral home. She heard murmurs of familiar sounds echoing in her mind, sounds of her grandparents’ meek voices over their antiquated telephone, how they always asked whether she had grown out her gangly legs. But she couldn’t remember the stories of the trees, the paths she crossed or her home where her youth was left behind, where the rivers ran its length of her grandmother’s tall tales and a solitary swim in the nearby pond took her breath away.

fwd-life-and-she-was-kani-jinson-abraham-fwd-5-3

For we are all people shaped like memories of things we left behind. But she, she was water. Some days, she could flow, lush out and capture banks. But lost in those woods that day, she was floating, like a leaf above a thick current. Still, suave, serene. If there was anything she loved more than her freedom, it is the way water sunk into her skin, Effortless, convincing, subtle.

fwd-life-and-she-was-kani-jinson-abraham-fwd-5-7

The morning was shrill as the cool air prickled her skin after the swim. Draped in a thin cheesecloth, she ran into the deep forests of the estate and finally rested under the canopy of towering trees. She grew familiar to the colour of morning. Amidst the flowers she lingered, she slipped into her sewn petticoat lined with the scents of cardamom and sandalwood.

fwd-life-and-she-was-kani-jinson-abraham-fwd-5-5

On the bark of the tree, she scribbled secrets and felt reassurance of protecting them in the roots of the ageing trees. Revisiting the old terrains, what was once written seemed so germinal, yet fresh as the fauna. As her feet seeped into the lush soil, her once forgotten lane suddenly seemed so clear.

fwd-life-and-she-was-kani-jinson-abraham-fwd-5-6

The misty nights grumbled with the trundle of the train. She couldn’t believe that the house was a receding memory. For something that almost distanced itself to nowhere in her mind, was the nearest thing to her now. The train came to a halt, there was silence, smug.

fwd-life-and-she-was-kani-jinson-abraham-fwd-5-2

The passenger seats seemed unfamiliar all over again. She laughed at it all, how her mind yearned for a childhood that was never hers. She wished for her grandparents’ peace. She closed her eyes and walked into a library of estranged wisdom. The train chugged along, she carried herself to a land of many stories, never to be who she was meant to be.

fwd-life-and-she-was-kani-jinson-abraham-fwd-5-1

As the sun dipped, she awaited her grandmother’s tea parties. The garden was wellspirited with the hearty laughs of her cousins. She always felt the grass was greener on the other side, with the bloom of cotton sarees. There was something lighthearted in their conversations, tatters mentioning neighbour’s names.fwd-life-and-she-was-kani-jinson-abraham-fwd-5-4

Just an ear away, she hid against the stairwell to hear stories she would never read in her grandfather’s library. So temptingly she eavesdropped and learned how girls became women. But in time she realised she couldn’t take a step back, she was a woman now. The patio now stood idle with rusted tables, overlooking a garden that retired to a company of creepers.

Step Up To The Streets

Transcending beyond the runways and the spotlights, fashion and photography take to the streets and find their place amidst grimy back alleys and bustling marketplaces

Text: Susmitha Suresh    Photos: FWD Media

Fashion, Photography & the Streets. Staying sharp in casuals that are stylish and upbeat is no easy deal. Maybe that’s why most fashion shoots happen behind close doors, and on runways where the glamor is reflected off of the models with spotlights and camera techniques. Transcending beyond that, Kochi born celebrity photographer Sanoj Kumar shot a series on the theme ‘Step Up To Fashion’ with Shani Shaki as the model. With over 17 years in the field, his choice of the backdrop for the shoot was not specifically tailor made for the shots. They were grimy back alleys and bustling marketplaces, all bright with life but seemingly devoid of the glamor of fashion. The streets gave you the freedom to break out of stigma, the team explored it in fashion that defined the wearer no matter where they were.

Step off the pavement in white loafers that attracts all eyes. The streets are never too grimy for a splash of white.

When everyday gets a little too monotonous, why not spice it up by adding a denim jacket to your style.

The walls may be faded, there might be rust all around, yet style always makes it presence known.

Your style defines you, mark your presence in denim and light coloured casuals. Wear a pair of shades for that extra dash of oomph.

Amidst iron, oil and rust, the white loafers and the printed shirt mark a contrast. Fashion and photography can bring out glamour even in grimy, gritty, raw backdrops.

The costumes for the shoot from True Life was styled by Jackie. The model, Shani Shaki, being a photographer himself, knew how to pull off each look, even against the unusual backdrops he had to shoot in. An altogether multi talented personality, he recently ventured out into a new business called Dos Caminos Picture Company, a production house along with Director Vinay Govind. His style, and ease of carrying off the garments combined with the skilled photographers careful and artistic shots gave life to an array of photographs that are eye catchy and undeniably trendy.

FWD picks iconic fashion photographers who defined Fashion Photography in their times

Text: FWD Media   Photos: Various Sources

It’s too much of a cliche´ to say that a picture is worth a thousand words. An iconic photograph should leave us visually spellbound and not always lost for words. A single photograph must become indelible as a supernova in the galaxy of our minds. FWD frames the work of iconic fashion photographers who saw photography more than a mere representation of life.

1950s – Richard Avedon

“I think all art is about control – the encounter between control and the uncontrollable.”

FWD Life 1 Fashion Photography Through The Years

FWD Life 2 Fashion Photography Through The Years

It may not be jarring as it seems, but Richard Avedon pushed beyond boundaries to create a contrast during those conservative days. In this striking photograph, a contrast is achieved with a lady’s silk Dior gown against the rough trunk of an elephant.

1980s – Annie Liebovitz

“When I take a picture I take 10 percent of what I see.”

FWD Life 3 Fashion Photography Through The Years

Famously known as a celebrity photographer, she captures them in a different light. Frank Kline’s famous abstract painting was the result of his emotions that the city aroused in him and he did not care to be in the painting. A painting that Steve Martin could only see himself in it.

1990s – Prabuddha Dasgupta

“I read somewhere that anything that can be taught is probably not worth learning”

FWD Life 4 Fashion Photography Through The Years

FWD Life 5 Fashion Photography Through The Years

Prabuddha Dasgupta was drawn to unconventional faces and he found beauty in places where nobody could. Sexuality was something innate and powerful, especially in his black and white photographs.

2000s – David lachapelle

“I never want people to be repulsed with my pictures; I always want to attract people.”

FWD Life 6 Fashion Photography Through The Years

David Lachapelle is known internationally for his exceptional talent in combining unique hyper – realistic aesthetic with profound social messages. In this case, it was to portray the extravagant lifestyle of Elton John.

2010s – Tarun Khiwal

“I discarded all the notions I had about photography.”

FWD Life 7 Fashion Photography Through The Years

Tarun Khiwal is a photographer who goes beyond the standard rules of photography from the poses to the set rules. He’s known for his unconventional techniques of bringing out any subject to life and uncovering the hidden cam.

He’s come a long way from being Mohanlal’s son

Text: Devika V Menon    Photos: FWD Media

Arjun Lal is a familiar face to the Malayalam industry, but as an ambitious kid in a middle-class family. Yes, he’s the same person who made his debut in the industry with the award-winning movie Thanmatra.

He has come a long way since then. He had decided to take a break from movies, since he wanted to focus on his education and then choose up acting as his career. But, he says that people still recognise him, as Mohanlal’s son from the movie.

FWD Life Arjun Lal (2)

Arjun Lal was scheduled for an exclusive shoot with FWD Life, which is when I had the chance to interview him, a quick rapid fire session, just to get to know him a little better.

Mohanlal or Mammootty?

Mohanlal, always.

Suits or shorts?

Suits. Makes you look classy.

Mundu or Pants?

Pants. No questions asked.

FWD Life Arjun Lal (3)

Music or Movies?

Movies. The real reason I wanted to become an actor!

Cars or Bikes?

Cars, for now. I don’t really know how to ride a bike.

Love or Lust?

Both. *chuckles* Don’t we need both?

FWD Life Arjun Lal (1)

Someone who means a lot to you?

My wife! Wait, wife who? *evil grin*

‘First impression is the best impression’ or ‘Never judge a book by it’s cover’?

First impressions. That’s how it ought to be.

FWD Life Arjun Lal (5)

What does ‘past’, ‘present’, and ‘future’ mean to you?

Past is in the past, something I don’t regret. What’s happened, has happened. Only the present and the future should matter, which for me is movies.

Favourite holiday destination?

Ah, I can’t really choose one. But my top three would be Amsterdam, Manali and Dubai. Will I get into trouble for these options?

FWD Life Arjun Lal (4)

Pasta or Sadya?

Pasta. I am a huge fan of continental food!

Favourite app?

Even though I’m a digital marketing person, I rarely use apps on my phone. But if had to name two, then I’d probably pick Instagram and Book My Show.

Dain Yoon- The woman who creates illusion!

The unique and weird makeup you would see in your entire life is from Dain Yoon

Text Credit : Silpa Rajan

“People live in illusions. They see everything in their own subjective way”, Dain thought. Then why should I flow with the current? The question that rose in Dain’s mind paved the way for her to become the unique makeup artist on earth.

Dain Yoon is a 24-year-old makeup artist from Seoul, South Korea, who creates illusions of eyes, lips, and face that can make anyone gazing on it dizzy or freaked out. Dain Yoon is possibly the unique makeup artist you could ever meet.

Artists give life to their ideas on some canvas. Whether it is a poet, picture, photograph or any art form, there should be a canvas. Dain Yoon only uses her body as a canvas. She had a great liking for painting since childhood, which helped her to join Yewon Arts Secondary, the most prestigious one in South Korea.

She spends hours on each work. Her illusion art makes people confused and appears like photoshopped. Her work makes us think whether its real or not. To clearly express a person’s diversity and diversity, one has to portray sensations arising from the impressions of people. This exploration made her focus on ‘Illusion art’.

The complexity of human life inspires her for her artworks. Her Instagram account designdain, is flooded with her works. She has a personal site, Dain Yoon where she posts all her artworks and videos. The previous year she was featured at THE ELLEN SHOW, which made her really popular.

The expensive Lungi-skirt !

Why would you buy a lungi at 5000?

Text Credit: Silpa Rajan

‘Those girls, they are bold. They had the guts to wear that lungi and shirt for Onam. I think lungi must be a part of our wardrobe too! ‘, I still remember the praises my friend made when a group of girls from a college in Kerala slayed the campus in the Premam style lungi on their Onam celebration. But then I had no idea that her words would actually come true.

Lungi is again in news for some new reasons.  Lungi, a South East Asian attire worn by men has made its way to Bollywood through Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express. The Lungi dance has shaken the B-Town. Fashion always takes it shape from vibrant customs, culture, and lifestyle. The inspirations they receive always influence the way they design each piece of thread on their work. Lungi has traveled so far from parts of South East Asia to Zara, the world’s largest fashion retailer. Zara has always come with unique trends that no other fashion tycoon could claim.

Zara is one of the largest fashion companies in the world. But this time Zara caught the attention of all fashion bloggers for some strange reasons. Zara introduced a skirt for Rs.4990. Why should be a skirt worth Rs.4990 in news? People are willing to spend crores on the brand.  The reason is,  Zara introduced a new skirt, which exactly resembles a lungi and the cost is 4990INR.

The lungi-skirt is actually categorized as a western wear. It comes in green-brown which is described by Zara as ‘mink-colored garment’. It is described as a ‘check mini skirt’ with ‘draped detail in the front’. It has the traditional black checks of a lungi. The only visible difference is that it is draped in a particular way but still has the slit in front. However, social media has gone mad on Zara and the garment is humiliated for possibly reasonable reasons. Why should you buy a Mink colored garment for almost 5K when you could actually buy a lungi at 150INR!
